“What’s With Everyone Posting About General Conference?”

Last weekend my Facebook feed exploded with posts from members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints during the semi-annual general conference (a twice a year meeting where the prophets, apostles and general authorities speak to members of the church worldwide).  Many people wrote about messages that touched their hearts, shared meme’s with quotes from the conference, and invited others to watch the broadcast with them.

I will gladly say I shared my enthusiasm as well on my personal Facebook page.  I also enjoyed checking twitter to see what other Latter day saints were tweeting about over the weekend.  Without surprise, however, there were a few who shared their dissatisfaction in the large multitude of posts and tweets that were filling up their feeds.  Hopefully I can shed some light on this phenomenon…

So, Why?

I think this social media flood, begs the question, “why?”  Why are Latter Day Saints so dang excited to share their thoughts about conference?  Why is there so much enthusiasm?  From a purely logical point of view, there really shouldn’t be anything exciting about LDS general conference. It’s 8 hours long (ten hours if you watch the general priesthood session) stretched over two days, has no pyrotechnics, no live bands (it has an amazing choir though…) and most of the speakers are kind of wrinkly.  The answer, in my view, as to why conference impacts so many people is summed up perfectly in this scripture by Paul the Apostle (I invite you to please read it slowly…it really is a brilliant scripture)

“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

But the natural man breceiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:12-14)

You see, the thing is, general conference is a spiritual feast.  It is a time when, if you approach it with an open heart and tuned into the spirit, you can receive personal revelation, personal comfort and personal strength.  I had two really big life questions that have been weighing on me quite heavily that were answered by the Holy Ghost.  The speakers and the conference brought the spirit into my life and it whispered to my soul the answers I had been so desperately looking for.

And when that happens, when you receive answers to your prayers, when you receive comfort, when you receive strength, when the spirit TRULY speaks to your heart, when you feel healed and rejuvenated, when you feel ALL these things, you often just can’t help sharing.  It means so much to you that you want others to receive the same blessing.

So if you haven’t yet, PLEASE, search your heart for the questions that are haunting you, bring them before the Lord in prayer, write them down and watch a session of General Conference with an open mind and heart.  I promise that you will be spiritually fed.  I promise that you will receive that much needed clarity and that your prayers will be answered.
